OVERVIEW
Liliana’s research focuses on energy – economic modelling with the help of PLEXOS for assessing the impacts of various decarbonization scenarios on large energy scale systems.
BACKGROUND
Liliana joined the Energy Transition Team of MaREI from the World Bank’ Energy Practice, in order to pursue her quest for ideas on how the future energy grids can be planned subject to intergenerational justice and environmental ceiling. Her work at the World Bank spanned from a wide range of analytical, operational and business strategy cutting across the energy sector and working on the macroeconomic, fiscal, governance, environmental and human development interface in fragile and post-conflict settings of the Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and Caribe, and Europe and Central Asia. Prior to joining the World Bank Group in 2014, Liliana was a Senior Energy Advisor at the Department of Natural Resources, where she managed the design and implementation of various programs and policies for clean energy. In this position, she also represented Canada in the Executive Committee of the International Energy Agency’s Implementing Agreements on Costs of Wind Energy, Wind-Hydro Integration, and the Social Acceptance of Wind Energy. Prior to joining the Canadian Public Service, she worked as an energy economist at the Institute of Integrated Energy System in Canada, the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis (IIASA) in Austria, and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) in Ecuador. Liliana Benitez served as an assistant professor of applied economics at the University of Bucharest and a contributing writer for the economic section of the “Romanian Daily”. She holds a Master’s degree (with Honors) in Economics from the Academy of Economic Studies in Bucharest, Romania and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Victoria, Canada.
