Post-Doctoral Researcher – ENTYRE
Applications are invited for an ambitious Post-Doctoral Researcher to join the SFI MaREI Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine in University College Cork (UCC), based at the Environmental Research Institute, working on the project ‘Mapping the Role of End-of-Life Tyres for a Sustainable Circular Economy in Ireland (ENTYRE)’. Tyres constitute an essential element of everyday life, but proposed EU regulations may limit the current uses of EOL tyres and require a critical analysis of alternative pathways for the use and repurposing of tyres in Ireland. The project ENTYRE will take a holistic approach in studying the current trends of waste tyre utilisation, alongside novel and innovative methods such as thermochemical, and biochemical conversion to identify routes to commercialise alternate end uses of used tyres.
Candidate
- A PhD in Civil, Chemical or Processing Engineering or closely related discipline.
- Expertise in thermochemical and biochemical processing of biomass for materials and fuel is highly desirable.
- Experience in process modelling (preferably using Aspen Plus or equivalent) followed by techno-economic assessment and life cycle analyses is essential.
- Expertise in supporting academic research, preparation of research reports and publications in peer review international journals.
- Previous research experience with tyre industry and understanding of EU Policies and regulatory framework would be a plus.
Research Team and Research Environment
The successful candidate will work within an interdisciplinary team including Dr Archishman Bose and Dr Richard O’Shea (Circular Economy, Energy, and Environmental Systems, SFI MaREI Centre and the School of Engineering and Architecture, UCC) and Dr Gillian Collins (School of Chemistry) based at Environmental Research Institute at UCC. The ERI brings together researchers working in the broad environmental field to address complex global sustainability challenges in a transdisciplinary approach. MaREI is a key research centre within the ERI, which is an internationally recognised Institute for environmental research dedicated to the understanding and protection of our natural environment and to developing innovative technologies, tools, and services to facilitate a transformation to a zero carbon and resource efficient society.
