The European Green Deal and MaREI
The European Green Deal is a EU wide commitment to tackling climate and environmental-related challenges and is designed to set Europe on a path to becoming a climate resilient, zero carbon society that improves the well-being of all citizens. The objectives of the Green Deal will be met through a number of instruments, research and innovation programmes being one element – with specific topics addressed through Horizon programmes.
MaREI, the SFI Centre for Energy, Climate and Marine is a key partner in three H2020 projects specifically focused on the Green Deal:
REACHOUT (Resilience in Europe Through Activating City Hubs – Reaching Out to Users with Triple-A Climate Adaptation Tools) is a €5 million project. MaREI as partner will collaborate with 18 other organisations to advance Climate Services for urban environments in seven City Hubs across Europe.
FORWARD 2030 (Fast-tracking Offshore Renewable energy With Advanced Research to Deploy 2030MW of tidal energy before 2030) is a €28 million project. MaREI as partner will provide expertise on aspects that include marine planning, and environmental and societal acceptance.
ILIAD (Integrated Digital Framework for Comprehensive Maritime Data and Information Services) a €17 million project to develop and launch a Digital Twin of the Ocean (DTO) that will provide highly accurate predictions of future developments at global seas. The ILIAD project comprises 56 partners from 18 different countries in Europe, the Middle East and North Africa, has been awarded the funding as part of the EU the €1 billion European Green Deal.
